Fight the Blight
Slippery Rock has a population of Cleveland Pears that have been compromised by the fire blight (Erwinia amylovora). For various reasons, the Cleveland Pear was the predominantly planted tree in town on Main Street. We want to remove and replace the trees that are in decline with a broader diversity of tree species (Hornbeams, Ivory Silks), and prune and maintain the town trees (Prospector Elms, Linden Trees, Red Buds, Royal Burgundy Flowering Cherries, and Cleveland Pears).
HELPING THE COMMUNITY
By replacing the Cleveland Pear trees in decline with a broader diversity of trees, not only will this improve plant fitness, but it will increase the aesthetic of the community. By having more species of trees on campus, bloom time will increase and there will be more color that paints the town.
We Need Your Help
There are two ways you can help
- Contribute your time and labor to assist us in removing and replacing the infected trees.
- Make a donation that will be used to acquire the needed trees
